![]() Here is a brief introduce to typical Chinese musical instruments. Chinese traditional musical instruments can be mainly classified into three categories, string, wind and percussion. With frequent cultural exchanges with other cultures, a large number of exotic instruments were introduced, altered and finally adopted into the family of Chinese traditional instruments. The dizi is a key Chinese musical instrument and is widely used in many kinds of Chinese folk music, as well as Chinese opera, and the modern Chinese orchestra. Its vocal tones are mainly composed of Xipi and Erhuang, to the music played by such instruments as huqin, gong, and drum. Many of the Tang emperors were musicians or composers themselves. It is also sometimes known as the di () or hengdi () and has an assortment including the qudi () and bangdi (). Peking opera is one of the five major traditional operas in China. Huge and complex instruments like the bronze chimes gave way to more lively and easy-play wind and reed instruments. The major instruments of Henan Opera are erhu (), banhu (), pipa (), so-na (), Chinese bamboo flute (), gong (), drum () and guzheng (). The roles can be divided into six subtypes based on characters played. However, as music was never limited to the upper social class, the musical trend gradually turned from solemnity to entertaining. Ruan is one of the oldest ancient Chinese instruments with more than 2,000 years of history. For them, music was also a way to display their power, position and taste distinguished from common people. The royal family and aristocrats had their own orchestra. Although the Beijing Opera stage is virtual, there are some real props, like knives, swords, flags, whips, paddles, stoves, the Four Treasures of Study, the weapons in actors hands, etc. More than 3,000 years ago, ancient China had some 70 types of musical instruments.
